OUR STORY
MIDWESTERN BARBERS, LLP
Midwestern Barbers, LLP, origin is traced back to 1999 when co-founder, Charles R. (Buzz) Cummins took a position as the only barber at the U.S. Air Force Reserve Base in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Cummins, out of Lee Barber School in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1964 at age 19, worked as a barber for the next three years in Owatonna, Minnesota, before changing a life direction. He enrolled at Mankato State College in the fall of 1967, seeking a degree in business education. He joined the U.S. Army Reserve just prior to attending college and served honorably for six years, receiving his discharge in 1971.
Cummins spent the next twenty-five years teaching business and coaching at the high school level. Deciding it was time for another change, he left teaching and returned to barbering in 1999 at the Minneapolis Air Base. It was during his eight years there that he became familiar with the contracting process for military base barbershops. In 2004 Cummins received his first two military contracts while still working full-time in the Minneapolis shop.
Progress over the next few years was smooth, steady growth as Cummins promoted his sole proprietorship called “The Old-Fashioned Barber.” His little company grew to six contracts with approximately 40 barbers under his employ. During this time he also purchased and managed six civilian barber shops in Southern Minnesota, employing another 10-12 barbers. In 2007 he purchased a civilian shop in Northfield, Minnesota, and left his position at the Air Base to work in Northfield.
In 2015, seeing the opportunity for growth, Cummins joined with retired U.S. Air Force Veteran, Richard Hachfeld, to form Midwestern Barbers, LLP. Hachfeld’s background with the military as well as his expertise in management and construction made him a perfect fit for the partnership.
With a company philosophy of treating employees with respect and value, paying an appropriate and respectable wage with benefits, and creating a “family” atmosphere throughout the company, Midwestern Barbers, LLP, has grown to approximately thirty barbershops across the proper United States, employing approximately 150 barbers.
Today the Company continues to seek military contracts throughout the United States for an opportunity to serve the best customers in the world! That results in the need to actively and continually seek barbers/beauticians to employ on military bases. Interested barbers/beauticians should go to the contact page on this website.
